The Somerset Levels: The geographic area surrounding Glastonbury is a low-lying basin that was often subject to flooding before the land was systematically drained for farming. During the historical period assigned to King Arthur, the flooded land would have created a huge lake, with the Glastonbury Tor rising up out of the water like an island.
Tor: According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, a tor is an exposed rock mass of jointed and broken rocks, rarely more than 50 feet high. They “usually overlie unaltered bedrock and are thought to be formed either by freeze-thaw weathering or by groundwater weathering before exposure.” Most tors in Great Britain are found in Cornwall or Devon.
